Setting Up an Email Client

IT recommends checking your email using the web at www.email.wm.edu. However, for those students who prefer to use an email client (e.g. Outlook, Windows Mail, etc.) we have instructions for configuring an email client through the POP/IMAP settings in Google.

Enabling POP/IMAP for Your Email Account

You can use either POP or IMAP to configure an email client. Unsure which one to use? Read this page from Google for the differences between the two.

You will need to first enable POP/IMAP for your email account:

  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. Click the gear icon in the top right.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  5. Select Enable POP/IMAP.
  6. Click Save Changes.

You will also need to turn on access for less secure apps for your email account:

Configuring Outlook w/ 2-Step Verification

Use Outlook with 2-Step Verification?  Follow these two steps to get set-up.

Step 1: Get an App Password
An App Password allows Google 2-Step Verification users to access their account from apps or devices that do not support verification codes or other verification methods.

  1. Visit the App passwords page. You may be asked to sign in to your Google Account.
  2. At the bottom, click Select app and choose the app you’re using.
  3. Click Select device and choose the device you’re using.
  4. Click Generate.
  5. Follow the instructions to enter the App password (the 16 character code in the yellow bar) on your device.
  6. Click Done.

After you click Done, you won’t see that App Password code again. Don't worry, you only use each password once. You can always generate a new App Password whenever you’re asked for one--even for a device or application you’ve authorized before.

Step 2: Update Microsoft Outlook
When Microsoft Outlook asks for your username and password, use the App Password you generated in Step 1 in the password field.

If the dialogue box asking for a username and password is no longer showing up, you can add your App Password to this account by going to File Info > Account Settings > Account Settings.

In the dialogue box that pops up, click Change in the Email tab, and enter your App Password in the password field. Click Next, and follow the steps to finish.
