In an effort to protect students and ensure their best interest, the U.S. Department of Education published the Program Integrity and Improvement rules (pdf) to provide students the ability to opt out of course/class fees associated with books or supplies. For more information on this regulation, please view the Course Fee Opt-Out document (doc).
$55 Million in Grants and Scholarships Distributed Annually
Through a combination of scholarships, grants, loans, work-study and other sources, generous financial assistance is available. In the 2023-24 academic year, 80% of first-year in-state students and 65% of out-of-state students received some type of aid. All in-state, Pell-eligible students automatically receive scholarship assistance to cover at least tuition and fees.
How Tuition is Spent
How Tuition is Spent
William & Mary combines several sources of revenue to provide students with an exceptional education. Approximately 80% of each tuition dollar directly supports academic and student services.
For every dollar of undergraduate tuition W&M receives,
- 43¢ goes toward instruction — supporting faculty compensation, supplies and materials and course-specific research that brings new discoveries into classrooms.
- 18¢ supports need-based financial aid — affording exceptional students the opportunity to attend W&M.
- 13¢ goes to academic support services — including libraries, instructional technology and curriculum development.
- 12¢ goes to institutional support — such as human resources and IT.
- 7¢ supports operations — for the care and security of our campus including facility maintenance and W&M Police.
- 4¢ goes to student services — like the registrar, career services, financial aid office and admission.
Every tuition dollar helps the people, places and programs across W&M's entire academic enterprise to flourish.
