Leadership & Values

William & Mary is led by President Katherine A. Rowe, Provost Peggy Agouris and four senior administrators who directly oversee the university's activities and departments. As a public institution in the Commonwealth of Virginia, we are directed by a 17-member Board of Visitors appointed by the governor.

The chancellor serves as the ceremonial head of the university and is elected by the Board of Visitors. George Washington was W&M’s first American chancellor. Others who have held this position include President John Tyler, Chief Justice Warren Burger, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
