Resources for Research
Conducting and disseminating research is a central responsibility of tenure-eligible and tenured faculty in Arts & Sciences. We support innovative and impactful research across the curriculum, including research with students.
Funding for Research
If you are a new faculty member, you may have access to start-up funds to support research-related expenses. Your department or program may also have dedicated funding for which you can apply. In addition, there are a number of other sources on campus to support faculty research:
- A&S Faculty Grants Fund for research-related travel, projects and events
- Reves Center International Conference Travel Grants
- Reves Center Faculty Fellows: international collaborative research and community engagement with students
- Drapers Faculty Fellows: archival research in UK
- W&M Faculty Seed Funding Grants (administered by Faculty Research Committee)
- W&M Faculty Research Grants (administered by Faculty Research Committee)
- Office of Diversity & Inclusion Innovative Diversity Efforts Awards
- Charles Center Faculty-Mentored Research Incubator: research with students
- Listing of external research grants: some with internal competitions
External Grants
The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) supports faculty applying for external grants, and manages grant money when it comes in. They welcome inquiries from new and established faculty.
Scheduled Semester Research Leave (SSRL)
Research-active tenured faculty are entitled to a Scheduled Semester Research Leave every seventh year, starting the first year after tenure is awarded. Departments and programs each have their own criteria for determining eligibility for an SSRL.
Research in D.C.
The W&M Washington Center has a list of library resources in the D.C. area that are accessible to W&M Faculty.
