Advising Undergraduate Students

Pre-major and Major Advising

  • The Advising Center (TAC) manages pre-major advising. All Arts & Sciences faculty are expected to serve as pre-major and major advisers. Support and training for pre-major advisers is offered by TAC, and major advising is managed within the department or program.
  • Pre-professional advisors are available for students with career goals that require professional graduate school.

Career Advising for Students

The Office of Career Development and Professional Engagement offers career advice for students. Faculty are encouraged to collaborate with the Office of Career Development to help students access resources and make career plans.

Academic, Social and Emotional Support for Students

Student Success offers resources and support for all aspects of student life. If you are concerned about one of your students – whether on academic, social or emotional grounds – you can file a Care Report, and someone from Student Success will reach out to the student and connect them with appropriate resources.

Students can also be referred to the W&M Counseling Center, the Student Health Center, or The Haven, a confidential resource center for those impacted by sexual violence and harassment, relationship abuse and intimate-partner violence, stalking and other gender-based discrimination.

Reporting Requirements

Faculty are required to report any threats of, or attempts at, suicide by a student.

Faculty are also required to report any sexual harassment or sexual violence affecting a student.
