Phase I: Vision, Mission, Values

Phase I of strategic planning refined and established a three-part statement of vision, mission, values. This statement forms the core of the planning process, and will guide forecasting and decision-making in Phases II and III. In the November Board reflection, President Rowe played back how the Strategic Planning Steering Committee arrived at the final statement.

Phase I Timeline

Timeline of phase 1 of the strategic planning process

July 1–October 1

President Rowe established two drafting groups, co-chaired by Dr. Virginia Ambler and Dr. Fanchon Glover. The groups reviewed William & Mary documents and prior statements and researched statements at peer institutions to craft an initial draft. They then sought preliminary comments from the university's student, faculty and staff representative bodies to refine the draft in advance of seeking broader community input. On October 1, the groups shared the first completed draft of the statement at an open forum. The presentation portion of the forum was livestreamed, so that all members of the community could participate.

October 1–November 7

Following the October 1 forum, the Strategic Planning Steering Committee held 12 presentations across campus, including at least one session at each of the university’s five schools and sessions with William & Mary staff, faculty and student governance bodies. Committee co-chairs also received, reviewed and responded to online submissions. Based on the totality of this feedback, the drafting groups made further refinements.

November 22 and on

The comprehensive statement was affirmed by William & Mary's Board of Visitors on November 22, 2019. The university's mission statement is now undergoing approval by SCHEV, as required by law.
