Message from the Dean

In Fall 2023, Arts & Sciences launched an exploratory, creative visioning process. The Future of Arts & Sciences initiative provides an opportunity to reflect on our future direction and establish a trajectory for the next five and ten years.

Broadly, the liberal arts and sciences are undergoing a period of crucial change, driven by the evolving needs of society, technological advancements, and shifts in the job market. This transformation offers tremendous opportunities for educators, students, and institutions alike.

It is also a time of change at William & Mary. Anchored in tradition, we continue to evolve to excel. In Fall 2023, William & Mary announced a new school to be established in computer science, data science, applied science and physics.

As William & Mary's largest academic unit and home of more than 40 academic departments and programs, Arts & Sciences is at the heart of the university and the student experience.

Convening stakeholders, leaders from across the university, and the community, the Future of Arts & Sciences coordinating committee will spend time listening, learning and examining what makes us Arts & Sciences. Where are we now, where are our strengths, and where do we want to be in ten years?

The committee will synthesize their findings in a report to me in May 2024, after which we will work to identify the best path forward for Arts & Sciences. I then plan to appoint an implementation committee.

It is a time of transformative change for the liberal arts and sciences. I look forward to working with the W&M community to address challenges and leverage opportunities as we step into the next chapter together.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences
