W&M Winter Abroad Handbook

This handbook offers guidelines that we hope students find useful when preparing to go abroad on a W&M Faculty-Led Winter Program.

Third Party Winter Programs

Students may also opt to go on a Third Party program during the winter.  These programs are often popular with students looking for experiences in locations where W&M does not currently offer direct programming.  These types of programs cover a vast array of experiences.  All winter programs must start after the W&M scheduled fall exam period (December 16, 2025) and end two days prior to the start of the spring semester (January 21, 2026).

Third Party Programs will need to be registered with the GEO by November 1, 2025.  Students can search for pre-approved programs in our registration portal. Students may attend programs not listed, however they will need to be approved by submitting a Petition to Attend a Non-Approved Study Abroad Program by the registration deadline.

Third Party Provider Winter Programs can fulfill COLL300, however students will need to follow our transfer credit procedures. Please visit our credit page. Students should visit the Third Party Programs page for more information.

For students in their final year at W&M, let your advisor know you are in your final year as the transfer credit process could effect your graduation date.

For all questions, please contact the appropriate study abroad advisor

W&M Winter Faculty-Led Programs

Each winter, W&M faculty direct short-term study abroad programs administered by the Global Education Office (GEO) in the Reves Center. Program locations and themes may vary from year to year. Programs include a 1 credit pre-course (INTR 299) that will take place during the fall semester after Fall Break. The 3-4 credit abroad course(s) will take place in the program location(s) during Winter Break. Both INTR 299 and the course(s) abroad must be completed in order to get COLL300.
