Literacy Lab Volunteers

Volunteer Opportunities

As a Literacy Lab tutor, you will volunteer in the schools 1.5-2 hours each week, supporting students who need extra literacy help. Participating in this program will help you gain a better understanding of how students learn to read and expand your own knowledge of the education system. You will follow tutoring plans made by the graduate students in the School of Education to assist the students and receive feedback on tutoring notes you will write after each session.

Volunteer Participation Requirements
Weekly Attendance

Consistent, on-time weekly attendance is critical to our relationships with schools, students, and families. In the case of illness/family emergency, you must inform their team leaders in advance.

Trainings & Issue Educations

For Literacy Lab, Professor Ramer will lead her own, individual training sessions throughout the semester, in addition to onboarding trainings for new members. As a Literacy Lab volunteer, you are exempt from GSP trainings (not including onboarding). You are required to go to 1 issue education per semester.

Reflection Sessions

Community engagement is most meaningful when it is paired with education on the social issue being addressed and critical reflection. Being part of Literacy Lab, you are required to participate in at least two reflection sessions a semester with the group facilitated by the Literacy Lab Coordinator or Professor Ramer.
