Application Checklist for International Applicants
International students applying as first-year students are accepted for enrollment in the fall semester, when you can participate in the full new student orientation program. Review the application checklist, important dates and deadlines and special application instructions for international applicants.
Application Checklist
- The Common App – Follow the special instructions for international applicants.
- Secondary School Report Form – Including official records of your courses and grades from all secondary schools and universities you have attended. In order to complete secondary school records, we need to have records from your ninth-grade year (last year of middle or junior high school) as well as your complete senior high school records. These records must be sent directly to us from your school. Certified non-English transcripts or grade reports should be accompanied by official (literal, not interpretive) translations. If you need to have your transcript or evaluations translated, you can use a translation service. A helpful resource for translation is the William & Mary International Education Evaluation (IEE) service.
- Students applying as international transfer students need to complete the transfer student application requirements.
Optional Application Materials
- Teacher Evaluation Form and Letter of Recommendation – You may submit one letter of recommendation with your application. Please do not submit more than two.
- Standardized Test scores – You may submit SAT/ACT scores and TOEFL, Duolingo or IELTS scores which are strongly recommended for international and non-native English speakers.
- Creative and Performing Arts Submission
- InitialView or Vericant - William & Mary is a welcoming community that offers endless opportunities to discuss big ideas both inside and outside the classroom. Applicants who are non-native English speakers are welcome to participate in a third-party, unscripted interview through InitialView or Vericant If you have interviewed with InitialView or Vericant, we encourage you to consider adding William & Mary to your list of schools as an optional way to supplement your application.
Dates & Deadlines
If you are applying to William & Mary, we ask that you submit your Common App by either Nov. 1 (Early Decision I) or Jan. 5 (Early Decision II and Regular Decision). The application is due by 11:59 p.m. in your time zone on the day of the deadline. Supplemental materials including transcripts, test scores and recommendations may still be submitted after the deadline.
Special Application Instructions
Personal Statement
The Undergraduate Admission Committee uses your written essay to learn more about you and to assess your writing skills. It is very important that you write these essays yourself so that we can make our admission decision knowing your English proficiency. We do not intend the writing sample to be a formal piece, but rather a reaction to one of our questions. Try to be specific in describing interests, beliefs or experiences.
Activities/Interests
In many high schools in the United States, students participate in clubs, sports and community service. The Undergraduate Admission committee understands that out-of-school activities will vary depending on one's culture and education system. On this page, please list interests, activities or work experiences that will give the committee insight into your life and how you have chosen to spend your free time.
Name
On all correspondence, your name should always be written in the same order. Be consistent. Students should enter their family name or surname as their "last" name on the application and all supporting documents. Non-U.S. citizens should be sure to write their name exactly as it appears on their passport. If you apply under one name and send documents and credentials under another, it will result in a delay of the process.
Social Security Number
If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you may not have a social security number. Please leave this section blank. The Office of Undergraduate Admission will assign you a student identification number.
Birth Date
Please enter the month first, followed by the day and then the year.
First-Year Student or Transfer Student
Unless you have already completed some study at a university, please mark first-year student. You will still be considered for transfer credit and may later be classified as a second-year student.
CEEB Number
This number is given to many international schools by the College Board to help track applicants; leave blank if your school does not have such a number.
Major Field of Study
Unlike many other foreign universities, William & Mary students do not pick a major area of study until the end of their second year. Please mark your interest area but understand that your selection is not a factor in the admission decision.
