Confucius Institute

The William & Mary Confucius Institute (WMCI), which was founded in 2011, will close June 30, 2021, at the completion of the current agreement with the university. William & Mary will continue to explore and strengthen its independent collaborations with Beijing Normal University (BNU) and other universities in China in order to maintain robust language, cultural and research opportunities for our students, faculty and the wider Williamsburg community.

The William & Mary Confucius Institute (WMCI) is charged with promoting the study of Chinese language and culture at William & Mary and in the Central and Southeastern regions of Virginia. The WMCI was established in 2011 and dedicated in 2012, joining a network of over 300 Confucius Institutes worldwide. It is the second Confucius Institute at a public university in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 2016, the university renewed its agreement with the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) on the co-development of WMCI. Click here to view to agreement in English or Chinese.

The WMCI is a collaborative program in partnership with Beijing Normal University (BNU) and the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban), a public institution affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education.
