Employment
Employment at William & Mary and VIMS
Scholars in J-1 status may only be employed pursuant to the terms of their J-1 program. For example, a J-1 Visiting professor may only be employed by the department that invited him/her, and only for duties congruent with his/her stay (e.g. teaching an extra course, delivering a series of lectures, departmental research assistance, etc).
For J-1 scholars who have a DS-2019 issued by another organization (e.g. Fulbright), they must receive employment authorization or a transfer of their SEVIS record from that program.
Employment is not allowed in traditional on-campus student jobs (e.g. cafeteria, bookstore, library, etc).
Occasional Lectures and Consultations at Other Institutions
For occasional lectures and consultations incidental to the primary purpose of the stay, scholars in J-1 status at William & Mary may accept honoraria from outside institutions or organizations provided that they have first received a letter of authorization from the Reves Center for International Studies. This type of work authorization is not granted retroactively.
Institutional Joint Ventures
In cases where a formal joint venture, relationship, or sponsorship exists between William & Mary and another organization or institution (such as Jefferson Lab or Colonial Williamsburg), a scholar sponsored for J-1 status by William & Mary may work on projects pursuant to that joint venture provided that the activity is otherwise congruent with the primary purpose of stay and his/her SEVIS record has been updated with the additional site of activity.
