About the Saint Andrew’s Scholarship for Study in the UK

The Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York provides scholarships to promote cultural interchange and goodwill between Scotland and the United States by offering $35,000 towards tuition, housing, and related fees for graduate school in Scotland.

To be eligible for the St. Andrew's scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be senior undergraduate students who will obtain a Bachelor’s degree from William & Mary in the Spring of 2025
  • Must have evidence of Scottish descent
  • Must demonstrate financial need.

Key selection criteria the St. Andrew's Society uses when determining scholarship recipients are:

  • A clear discussion of the significance of studying in Scotland for the applicant's graduate and professional goals.
  • Possession of qualifications which will enable the applicant to be a good ambassador for the United States while in Scotland.
  • Strong academic achievement throughout the applicant's undergraduate degree
  • Involvement in extracurricular activities that demonstrate dedicating time and energy to passions or interests
Campus Nomination Process

Overview: Application materials must be submitted to W&M's St. Andrew's campus Box folder by the campus deadline of Sunday, October 27 by 11:59 p.m. EST. Interested students must email William & Mary's Assistant Director for Fellowships to receive access to the St. Andrew's scholarship application instructions. The St. Andrew's Society usually makes these instructions available in late September.

Interested students are encouraged to request the application instructions well in advance of the campus deadline to ensure ample time to prepare application materials. When requesting application instructions, please include information about your interest in applying for the scholarship and confirmation that you meet the eligibility requirements for the scholarship.

By the campus deadline, applicants must upload the following materials to W&M's St. Andrew's campus Box folder:

  • A completed application form
  • A 1-page resume or CV
  • The most recent copy of the applicant's unofficial transcript. This should be downloaded as a PDF from Banner
  • Two short essays (not to exceed 200 words each) outlining the applicant's desire to continue their education as well as the applicant's motivation to study in Scotland and why this is important for their goals
  • A statement of financial need prepared by the applicant that outlines why they require financial assistance to pursue graduate study in Scotland
  • Proof of citizenship (e.g., a picture of the information page of a valid passport)

In addition to these materials, applicants must make arrangement for the following items to be uploaded to W&M's St. Andrew's Box folder by the campus deadline:

  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals that can speak to how the applicant meets the selection criteria used by the St. Andrew's Society
  • A statement from an appropriate official at W&M with knowledge of the applicant's financial status who can certify that assistance would be required for a year of graduate study in Scotland

Application Format: Applications are fillable pdfs distributed by the St. Andrew's Society directly to the OUAA's Assistant Director for Fellowships.

Deadlines and Timeline: 

  • Early fall: Interested applicants should email the Assistant Director for Fellowships in the OUAA to request the application form and instructions distributed by the St. Andrew's Society of New York.
  • Sunday, October 27 by 11:59 p.m. EST: Campus Application Deadline. By this date the application materials outlined above must be uploaded to W&M's St. Andrew's campus Box folder.
  • Late October through late November: Applications are reviewed by the St. Andrew's campus committee. Interviews with applicants may be scheduled if necessary.
  • Early December: Applicants whose materials have been endorsed by the campus committee will be able to edit their application before submitting it in time to meet the national deadline.

Nominations: William & Mary is limited to endorsing one graduating senior per year.

National Application Process

The national deadline for the St. Andrew's scholarship usually falls in mid-December. A more detailed deadline will be posted once the St. Andrew's Society of New York releases the application form.
