Monroe Scholars Program Benefits

The following are some of the benefits James Monroe Scholars receive:

Every first-year Monroe Scholar is eligible to apply for a $1,000 grant to conduct a three-week research project during the summer after the first year. These competitive grants are restricted to Monroe Scholars and fund projects that build on themes or concepts encountered in their courses. About 50 of these grants are awarded each year.
All Monroe Scholars are guaranteed a $3,000 grant for a summer research project of their own design. These projects are undertaken after the sophomore or junior year. Projects may be conducted on the William and Mary campus or might involve travel to specialized domestic or foreign library collections, laboratories, field stations, or other research facilities.
The Office of Undergraduate Admission will be sending admitted Monroe Scholars opportunities in the spring to explore the program, meet current Monroe Scholars and faculty members, and engage in the community.
First-year Monroe Scholars may choose to live in Monroe Housing which is located in DuPont Hall for the 2023-2024 academic year.
Monroe Scholars are given special consideration in the appointment of first-year advisors and are given priority registration for their first semester of courses.
Monroe Scholars are invited to the Enrichment Series of lectures/discussions held throughout the academic year. These informal sessions allow Monroe Scholars to meet and interact with many William and Mary faculty and outside speakers from all fields. Lunch or snacks are provided.
In addition to the Monroe Grants, the College provides a variety of other summer grants opportunities that are open to Monroe Scholars.
The Monroe Scholars Program hosts a variety of programming events for scholars, including social events.
Monroe Scholars enjoy a close relationship with the Charles Center, the home of the Program's administrative offices and student research, interdisciplinary studies, and faculty development.
