Hispanic Studies at W&M
Hispanic studies students learn about Spanish, Latin American and U.S. Latino/a cultural production, including the visual arts, literature, journalism, film, oral narratives, social media, performance and material culture. You will gain fluency through intensive academic training in Spanish, study abroad opportunities and internships. You will also grow your cross-cultural competencies, linguistic fluency and greater knowledge and expertise about cultural systems in the Spanish-speaking world.

Gain linguistic skills via coursework or studying abroad, analyze and challenge representations of social inequalities and more — and do it all in Spanish!
Research on Interdisciplinary Topics
Carry out interdisciplinary research in seminars, abroad with on-site fieldwork, on Honors projects and more with the opportunity to receive funding and go abroad.
Internships & Real-World Experiences
Apply coursework in mentored internships and experiences on campus, locally and abroad in fields such as education, human rights and medical interpretation.

Learn about The (Latinx) American Dream (HISP 150), Spanish for the Professions (HISP 209), Introduction to Puerto Rico (HISP 291) and Cultures in Translation (HISP 352).*

Research
Complete research on topics related to civil rights, indigenous art, border cultures, contemporary social movements and diasporas in the Hispanic global south and religious communities during medieval times.

Summer Study Abroad
Complete independent research courses in Cádiz, Spain, live and work on a sustainable farm in Palugo, Ecuador or spend a semester in Seville, Spain or La Plata, Argentina.

Hispanic Language House (Casa Hispánica)
Practice Spanish language skills and experience Hispanic culture with 14 other students and an international fellow from Spain or Argentina in this residence hall.

Outcomes
Hispanic studies graduates are highly trained with critical thinking, writing and speaking skills. They are fluent in the Spanish language and experienced with research methods and cross-cultural projects. This training has prepared them to work in every professional field imaginable, including NGOs, media and communications, global markets, education, law, public health policy and medicine and the fine arts.
