2016 Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence
Artisia Green
To the delight and enthusiasm of her students, Professor Green draws on a deep well of pedagogical technique to construct transformational teaching and learning experiences. In her first year of teaching, she and her students created a theatre colloquium on early African-American Theatre history, with the students designing and sharing public educational programming. A recent example of her continued dedication to innovation is her success in arranging the campus visit by noted author Ntozake Shange, which she complemented by recruiting visual artists to accompany student performances of Ms. Shange's work – a burst of creativity providing both the culminating unit for her course “New Black Math” and a memorable evening of education through theatre and fine art. Students regularly cite her high level of preparedness, organization, thoughtful and well-prepared lectures, and well-guided discussions. A colleague notes: "I am yet to encounter a student in Africana Studies who has taken a course with Professor Green who is not transformed after the experience." It is fitting that she now be recognized with the Arts and Sciences 2016 Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence.
