Expanded Tech Offerings

Many tech companies, service providers, and cybersecurity firms are expanding their tech offerings at this time. This page will be edited to reflect ongoing changes. Check back frequently.

In addition to the changes made by W&M IT to facilitate the response to COVID-19, other tech companies are also offering free or expanded technology services that may be relevant to the W&M community at this time.

Technology and Cybersecurity Offerings
  • Google announced that Google Workspace and Google Workspace for Education users will now have access to advanced features for Hangouts Meet through July 1st. Users can host virtual meetings with up to 250 people and live streams with up to 100,000 viewers, and save recordings of their meetings to Google Drive.
  • Microsoft is offering a free six-month trial of its premium tier of Teams, and is also enabling users of its free version to add more members and schedule video meetings.
  • Adobe is enabling student at-home access to Creative Cloud tools through May 31st. This includes free download and installation of apps such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

    If you previously downloaded Acrobat DC as part of the free Adobe Creative Cloud access and are getting the message you have a trial version, follow the steps in the "I see a Trail Prompt..." FAQ to fix it.

  • 1 Password is making the first six months of its 1Password Business subscription free, enabling users to make one password for better remote cybersecurity practices.
  • Cloudflare announced that Cloudflare for Teams will be free for six months to help maintain security for organizations' applications and employee web use.
Digital Content Offerings
  • Gale is offering librarians and educators free access to digital resources on virtual instruction. These include interdisciplinary and curriculum resources, live and on-demand training materials, and e-books.
  • Wiley has made WileyPLUS, Knewton Alta and zBooks available through the Spring 2020 semester. They have also made more than 5,000 COVID-19-related articles freely available on the Wiley Online Library site.
Internet Service Offerings
  •  AT&T announced that it will not terminate service for any wireless, home phone, or broadband residential or small bus customer due to inability to pay. It also will do the following:
    • Waive late payment fees.
    • Keep their public Wi-Fi hotspots open for any one who needs them.
    • The service will also be offering unlimited internet data and offer internet access for limited income households at $10 a month through the Access from AT&T program.
  • Charter Communications announced the following:
    • Free spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 or college students who don't have a Spectrum broadband subscription. Installation fees will be waived for new student households.
    • Open WiFi hotspots.
  • Comcast announced that it is opening up its Xfinity WiFi network for everyone. It also will do the following:
    • Hotspots across the country will be available to anyone who needs them for free, including non-subscribers.
    • Data plans will be paused for 60 days, which will give all customers unlimited data for no additional charge.
    • No late disconnects or late fees for those who contact the company about not being able to pay their bill.
    • Internet Essentials, its broadband adoption program, is free to new customers.
  • Cox announced that it will offer a low-income internet tier with no annual contract and relax data usage overage charges for all tiers. It also announced the following, through May 15th:
    • Waiving any late fees that residential or small business customers incur because of their economic circumstances related to COVID-19.
    • Opening Cox Wifi outdoor hotspots to help keep the public connected in this time of need.
    • A $19.99 offer for new Starter internet customers with a temporary boost up to 50 Mbps download speeds, no annual contract or qualifications to help low income and those impacted from COVID-19 challenges, like seniors and college students.
    • Eliminating data usage overages beginning today to meet the higher bandwidth demands. Customers with a 500 GB or Unlimited data usage add-on plan will receive credits.
  • Sprint announced the following:
    • It won’t terminate service if customers are unable to pay due to COVID-19 issues.
    • It will waive late fees caused by economic disturbances related to COVID-19.
    • Customers with international long-distance plans will get complimentary international calling rates from the U.S. to countries defined by the CDC as Level 3.
    • Customers will get an extra 20GB of mobile hotspot data per month for 60 days.
    • Customers with metered data plans will have unlimited data per month for 60 days at no extra cost.
    • Coming soon: Customers with mobile hotspot-capable handsets without a hotspot will get 20GB per month for 60 days at no extra cost.
  • T-Mobile announced the following:
    • All current T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile customers who have data plans will have unlimited smartphone data, excluding roaming.
    • T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile customers will get an additional 20GB of mobile hotspots/tethering service for the next 60 days. The company says this feature will be coming soon.
    • It will work with Lifeline partners to get customers extra free data up to 5GB per month over the next two months.
    • It will increase data allowance for free to schools and students for the next 60 days, which means at least 20GB of data per month for each participant.
