Notice regarding Gail Bareford Hardinge

Provost Peggy Agouris sent the following message to the campus community May 13, 2021. - Ed.

Dear Colleagues,

I write to share the news that Gail Bareford Hardinge (M.Ed. ’85, Ed.S. ’89, Ed.D. ’96), Executive Director, Troops to Teachers Virginia Center and formerly Clinical Associate Professor of Education, passed away on May 9, 2021 after a brief but courageous battle with ALS.

In her professional life, Dr. Hardinge was a tireless advocate for public education and spent the last 17 years working for William & Mary. She served 18 years as a member of the New Kent County School Board. Prior to that, she worked many years as a school psychologist for Williamsburg-James City County and New Kent County Public Schools.

Professor Hardinge served in many roles in the School of Education, including as a Clinical Associate Professor in the School Psychology and Counselor Education Programs teaching assessment and intervention courses and supervising School Psychology practica and internships. She was also highly successful in securing and directing major grants. Beginning in 2005, she served as Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI on a series of grants funded by the Office of Naval Research to engage K-12 students with Naval engineers conducting science and technology projects. Most recently, she directed the Troops to Teachers Virginia Center administered by William & Mary for the Virginia Department of Education helping veterans statewide become K-12 educators. Her entrepreneurial spirit and skills in creating interagency partnerships enabled her to lead especially innovative projects.

Gail was known for her quick wit, her loud laugh, and her sage advice. In her free time, Gail loved gardening, reading, and caring for her horses. She will be missed by many.

She is predeceased by her mother and father, Marian and William Bareford, and is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Baxter; her two children, Payton (Matt) and William; brother, Gary Bareford; brother-in-law, Randall Vaughan; great-aunt, Jacqueline Hoff; many life-long friends, and her beloved horses and dogs.

An outdoor memorial service will be held on Monday, May 17, 5:00 p.m. at Cumberland Estate, 9007 Cumberland Road, New Kent, VA 23124.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Dr. Gail B. Hardinge Scholarship held by the New Kent Educational Foundation. Contributions may be mailed to P.O. Box 110, New Kent, VA 23124. Tributes may be posted at www.vincentfh.com.

Sincerely,

Peggy
