Hurricane Florence Update (Message 6)

September 14, 2018, 4:10 pm

Dear William & Mary Community –

While Hurricane Florence has had a major impact on the Carolina coasts, thankfully impacts in Williamsburg and the William & Mary campus were not severe. Therefore, classes will be in session and university offices will open on Monday, Sept. 17. At that time, classes and university services will be on a normal operating schedule.

Residence halls will re-open on Sunday, Sept. 16 at noon. Students will not have access to their rooms prior to that time. Residents should be certain to pack their room keys. All doors have been locked and keys and IDs will be necessary for entrance into residence halls.

For transportation resources, including information about shuttle service from Northern Virginia, visit www.wm.edu/auxiliary.

Dining Services will re-open Commons from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday for dinner. On Monday, Sadler and Commons will open at 8 a.m. and all remaining dining operations will open at 11 a.m. on Monday and resume normal hours.

We realize it will take some time for all of our students to return to campus. As we always do in these situations, the Provost is asking faculty to be as accommodating as possible if students are delayed from returning to campus by Monday. The Provost has also determined there is no need at this time to make additional changes to the academic calendar.

Because of operations related to the state-operated shelter at the McCormack-Negelsen Tennis Center, parking may be limited in the vicinity of the Law School and Grad Complex.

There is some additional information below, and the Call Center will be open today from 4 to 7 p.m., if you have any questions.

Hurricane Florence (Message 1)

September 10, 2018, 2:20 pm

Dear William & Mary community:

We have the first major storm of the hurricane season threatening to make landfall on the East Coast later this week. The National Hurricane Center is advising that Hurricane Florence – currently approximately 1,300 miles east/southeast off of Cape Hatteras, N.C. – will likely make landfall along the Carolina coastline late Thursday. The latest reports indicate the system is a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 130 mph. The storm is forecast to likely make landfall as a Category 4 hurricane.

While it is still too early to be confident in the storm’s projected path, impact or strength, there is enough information to warrant caution and initial planning, including:

1) It is a priority for all residential students to review your personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (this should be on file in your Banner personal service - https://personalinfo.wm.edu - account). Your plan should include both a planned destination in the event campus must close and arrangements for how to get there. If you have not yet made a plan, please do so. If you need assistance, contact your RA or other Residence Life staff.
2) Department heads should move forward with necessary planning and preliminary steps within their Department that may be needed for a possible Hurricane event.
3) Please familiarize yourself with the numerous ways William & Mary has to communicate to the campus community during an emergency. In addition to the emergency notifications received through RAVE – text, phone call, email, siren and Alertus (a notification to your computer screen) – you may also receive notifications by following W&M News on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wmnews/ - or Twitter, - https://www.twitter.com/wmnews - or by using the W&M mobile app - https://www.wm.edu/mobileapps/.
4) If you have not yet enrolled in the university's mass notification system - https://personalinfo.wm.edu/ -, you should immediately do so in Banner personal service.
5) It is also important for students living on campus to review these guidelines - https://www.wm.edu/offices/residencelife/documents/hurricane.pdf - from residence life for storm and possible power outage preparations. For students living off campus, please review this checklist - https://bit.ly/1hn6yoZ.

Should you be planning to travel anywhere south along the east coast this week please check the weather forecast and use extreme care.

In the event that the university should need to close, the EMT will communicate with the campus community via William & Mary’s Emergency Alert System. Any updates about dining services will be available through the W&M Dining Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/wmdining/ - and updates regarding athletic events through the Tribe Athletics’ website - https://www.tribeathletics.com and Twitter page - https://www.twitter.com/tribeathletics.

We will know more in coming days about the storm’s path and impact in relation to Hampton Roads and the Williamsburg area. William & Mary’s Emergency Management Team will continue to watch the storm closely and update the campus community by noon tomorrow.

Sam Jones, Chair
William & Mary Emergency Management Team
