W&M supports cutting-edge research focused on solving many of the fundamental and practical problems the world faces while providing the best possible training for future scientists, engineers, educators and world citizens.

Applied Learning

Learn about Experimental Atomic Physics (PHYS 251), Fluid Mechanics (PSYC 302) and Modern Astrophysics (PHYS 476).*

Makerspaces
Bring ideas to life in the 13 makerspaces around campus including additive (3D printing) and productive (woodshop) manufacturing.

Research
Take part in research, the core of our physics program. Each W&M physics major completes a year-long, faculty-mentored research or R&D project.

Attend PhysicsFest, the LaserFest Road Show and other events held by the Physics Department.
Outcomes
Many physics majors go on to pursue advanced degrees in physics or related sciences. A physics education also provides a general scientific foundation for subsequent specialization in many other career paths including engineering, law, biology, mathematics, computer science, environmental science, finance, technical sales, industrial management, education and oceanography.
School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics
The School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics expands the university's ability to prepare students to thrive in a data-rich world. It will bring together four of the university's high-performing units: Applied Science, Computer Science, Data Science and Physics. These will move into the new school in the fall of 2025.
Alumni Spotlight
Derek Dietz '22 worked as a plasma analyst at the DC Pulsed Ion Implantation facility during his time at William & Mary. This research experience provided him with the skills to excel as a team leader during an internship with the NASA Langley Research Center where he worked to develop wildfire mitigation technologies. He is now a radio frequency engineer at Mission Technologies.
