Apply to be a Peer Consultant at the Writing and Communication Center

Who are WCC Peer Consultants?

Writing and Communication Center consultants are trained peer tutors who work with students in 50-minute consultations on writing and communication skills. They are also responsible for additional duties that assist in the daily operations of the WCC. Consultants come from across the disciplines, majoring in Chemistry, Economics, English, Government, Hispanic Studies, History, Kinesiology, Math, Psychology, and more.

Strong applicants are those who work well in a collaborative environment; have strong (or growing) critical thinking and problem solving skills; demonstrate ability in written and verbal communication; are open to diverse ideas and new ways of thinking, and exhibit effective work habits. Freshmen and sophomore applicants are given priority, but juniors are also encouraged to apply.  A complete job description is linked below.

When Can I Apply?

In Fall 2024, the application period opens October 7. Completed applications are due November 17. The application asks a series of short-answer questions. Applicants must also provide: an academic writing sample, a draft of their spring schedule; and a faculty recommendation. This information should be submitted online (the links below will be active during the hiring window).

Selected applicants will be interviewed during the first week of final exams. Those accepted into the trainee cohort are expected to enroll in WRIT 399: College Writing Theory and  Practice, a two-credit class offered each spring on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12-1. The course is an introduction to the history, theory, and practice of writing center work and includes opportunities to observe and practice consulting.

Trainees who complete the course will become paid peer consultants in Fall 2025. Consultants earn $12/hour. Most consultants work 3-6 hours per week. All consultants are expected to maintain a 3.0 GPA and attend staff meetings on alternate Mondays from 12-1pm.
