The Haven Project: Gender and Sexuality Justice on Campus

Project Description: Professor Diya Bose, Sociology and GSWS, is leading a community-based research project that focuses on investigating student experiences regarding restorative justice model of care implemented by the Haven. The primary objective of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Haven’s current approach in preventing and addressing campus sexual violence. To this end, this project will involve drafting a policy paper regarding the university’s approach to sexual harassment and violence on campus based on the lived experiences of students and cutting-edge sociological research on gendered violence. Additionally, this research resources to strengthen the Haven’s important work by creating a one-credit course on gender justice on campus for all in-coming Freshmen and Sophomores. This project will be based on focus groups with current students, semi-structured interviews with students and staff at the Haven as well as archival research of university policies and WM-based social media posts and Flat Hat reports.

Student’s Role: Students will provide research assistance and administrative support to include (but not limited to): administrative support and logistics in organizing the student focus groups, assisting the PIs in compiling notes from the focus group meetings, loading notes and interview transcripts into a qualitative data analysis program, conducting web and library research.  

 
Qualifications: Preference will be given to students who have completed at least two Gender-related courses. The research fellow must complete CITI training for our IRB proposal (an online training that takes approximately 3 hours) by the start of Summer 2024. Time management skills, high levels of cultural sensitivity, and the ability to be flexible and independently meet deadlines are required. $15/hr 2-4 hours per week depending on project needs.
