2017 Economics Diploma Ceremony

The Diploma Ceremony for the class of 2017 was held in the front Wren Yard on Sunday, May 14, 2017 at 1:30 PM. A glorious day of sunshine and warmth greeted faculty, some 130 economics grads, and their proud families.
Brief remarks were made by Prof. Berhanu Abegaz, chair of Economics. Among other things, he noted that:
- Three of our graduates have been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the highest award a liberally-educated student may receive. They are: Juliet Downie, Elizabeth Towell, and Quentin Ullrich.
- Brandon Posner completed senior honors under the supervision of Prof. Tatyana Kuzmenko.
- Thanks to the generosity of several of our alumni, the department annually gives out a number of competitive merit-based or need-based scholarships. This year, 8 majors won the Glenn Memorial Scholarship, 2 won the Goble Scholarship, and 8 won the Archibald-Finifter Scholarship.
- Professor Archibald retired this year after 41 years of distinguished service to the Department and the College.
- Haoge Chang won the Robert A. Barry Award for the most outstanding senior in Economics.
- A survey of graduating seniors shows that most will hold a variety of jobs in the private sector (especially consulting and research analyst positions), the public sector, and the non-profit sector. Many will pursue graduate study in business, law, and economics. Among those joining Ph.D. programs in Economics are Haoge Chang (Yale), Darwin Chen (U. of Washington), Juliet Downie (Minnesota), and Will Ferris (Virginia Tech).
