Professor Craig Parker to present a lecture in the Music in American Cultures Series

Dr. Craig ParkerProfessor Craig Parker's (Kansas State University) free illustrated talk will focus on “Dixie” and and its immense popularity during Reconstruction and later in the South (including how Sousa's Band reaped great rewards by playing it incessantly on their Southern tours).  He'll also discuss his own diverse (and sometimes controversy-inciting) experiences with the tune from the 1960s to the present..  The program is presented in conjunction with the William and Mary Department of Music as part of its Music in American Culture lecture series.

Craig B. Parker teaches undergraduate and graduate music history and also plays trumpet with the K-State Faculty Brass Quintet. He has also taught a variety of music theory courses at K-State as well as applied trumpet and horn. Parker was a member of numerous professional ensembles, including the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, Spoleto (Italy) Festival Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, and the Composers Brass Quintet.
