Insights from Within (IfW)

Insights from Within (IfW) focuses efforts on internal conversations that reflect the broad experiences of all Arts & Sciences stakeholders (i.e., students, staff, and faculty) with sessions led by members of our community and/or alumni.

A&S Inclusive Inquiry Speaker Series brings transformational organizations and/or speakers to our community to achieve the following goals:

  • Exploring our shared values around DEI
  • Broadening Arts & Sciences engagement with diverse perspectives.
  • Enhance our inclusive teaching and research practices through community dialogue and collaboration.

AFFURM Faculty Network Pilot

The Dean's Office has established a 2-year pilot designed to support the transition and success of A&S faculty by addressing the unique needs of members of our diverse faculty communities, providing meaningful professional connections to faculty peers that foster positive retention and holistic career outcomes, and increasing a sense of belonging in A&S and W&M. The pilot, known as AFFURM, recognizes the broad diversity of our faculty community to include those who hold various Affinities or Affiliations, those that are Underrepresented and/or Racially Minoritized (URM) and is open to all A&S full-time faculty and post-doctoral fellows who started in their current positions after fall 2020. The goals of the program are to:

  • Expand scholarly networks through peer-to-peer professional connections.
  • Serve as a complementary resource for success in teaching, research, and service.
  • Create lasting professional connections that increase a sense of belonging and retention outcomes in Arts & Sciences and William & Mary.
Arts & Sciences Open Inquiry Awards

The Arts & Sciences diversity statement affirms that “We embrace open inquiry and welcome individuals, perspectives, and ideas that reflect the heterogeneity of the United States and the world.” 1 In this statement, our community commits to supporting a diverse curriculum and upholding the value of a learning environment of inclusion and respectful engagement of differences and similarities in our pursuit of academic excellence. Our community has made significant gains in these areas through the ongoing work of the Center for the Liberal Arts (CLA) and, most recently with the COLL 350 requirement. The Arts & Sciences Open Inquiry Awards (OIA) further actualizes this commitment by supporting faculty efforts to promote open inquiry of diverse experiences and perspectives in existing or new non-COLL courses.
