Research Profile of the New School

Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Science and Physics share a strong commitment to pursuing externally funded research and publishing in high-impact publications. All four currently grant doctoral degrees. In these rapidly evolving fields, graduate education and graduate-level research inform undergraduate offerings.

Combined research expenditures in Computer Science, Applied Science and Physics in FY 2023 totaled $8.4 million, or 65.5% of Arts & Sciences' total. Data Science began fully operating at William & Mary in August 2022; during its first year, it collected $1.8 million in externally funded research projects.

Additionally, five-year trends in research expenditures reflect 30% growth in Computer Science, Applied Science and Physics, suggesting a healthy projection for the research portfolio of the new school. That projection is only expected to improve as Data Science, established in 2022, becomes a full contributor.

Citations

Researchers in the new school are already leading their fields and William & Mary as a whole. Of the top 30 most-cited W&M authors, more than half (54%) hail from Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Science and Physics. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science houses the second-most-cited researchers, at 23%.
