About
Dr. Virginia Wells joined the tribe staff during the summer of 2019, transitioning from her position as Director of William & Mary’s Student Health Center, a position she held for 11 years. As medical director of the health center, Dr. Wells managed a staff of 26 employees and implemented nutritional services, expanded mental health services, modified employee duties to improve efficiency of operations and expanded clinic hours to meet the needs of graduate students and athletes with challenging schedules. A former student athlete herself, Dr. Wells has always had an interest and desire to work in Athletics. Her specialties include Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

Prior to coming to William and Mary she served as Assistant Professor of Medicine and Hospital Epidemiologist at the Medical College of Virginia (VCU). Her responsibilities there included teaching, research and patient care. She has also practiced Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases successfully for 10 years in the Williamsburg Community and she still provides Infectious Disease consultation for her colleagues in the community.

Hailing from Sierra Leone by way of Houston, TX, Dr. Wells received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Austin College in Sherman, Texas where she played both tennis and basketball for four years. She then attended medical school at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Her post graduate training, Intern/Residency/Infectious Diseases Fellowship, were all completed at The Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, Virginia

Dr. Wells is an avid golfer (introduced to the game by her son Trevor) and carries a handicap of 7. She can often be found wherever there is live music, particularly Blues or Singer Songwriter. Her favorite travel partner is her daughter Kelsey.
