Lockout/Tagout

Lockout/Tagout is the OSHA standard for the control of hazardous energy. It addresses the practices and procedures necessary to disable machinery or equipment, thereby preventing the release of hazardous energy while employees are performing servicing and maintenance activities. Hazardous energy sources that must be controlled include electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical and thermal. Workers must also adhere to requirements while working on electrical circuits and equipment.

Employees servicing or maintaining equipment may be exposed to serious physical harm or death if the hazardous energy is not properly controlled. FM Directive 781 has established procedures regarding Lockout/Tagout on campus. Employees are trained to ensure they know, understand and follow the applicable provisions of FM Directive 781.

The EH&S Office conducts an annual audit of the program that includes building inspections, editing program document(s) and reviewing training records. A copy of the latest audit is available upon request to the EH&S office.
