Academic Probation

Students whose academic work falls below the minimum GPA and/or earned credit Continuance Standards will be placed on probation for the following semester.

Students who do not meet the following conditions for probation will be suspended from William & Mary for academic deficiencies:

  • Students on probation may not enroll in more than 16 credit hours per semester.
  • Students who are on probation may not receive any final grades of incomplete for coursework during the semester of probation.
  • Students on probation must participate in the ASPIRE Program during their probationary semester, and meet all required deadlines.
  • While on probation, students must earn a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher and pass at least 12 credits.

Students have one semester to come into compliance with the Continuation Standards. If, however, they earn a minimum 2.0 semester GPA in at least 12 credits during a probation semester, an additional probationary semester may be granted to comply with the overall Continuance Standards.

Students enrolled in William & Mary summer school while on probation will be evaluated for removal from probation at the end of the summer semester. Students who are placed on probation, or are continuing on probation at the end of a semester but earned at least a 2.0 GPA and 12 credits during that semester, will be removed from probation if they meet their Continuance Standards by the end of the summer semester. This applies only to work completed in a W&M summer program (either on campus or in Washington, D.C.).
