Solar Production

On-Campus Solar

The first solar panels at the university were installed at the Keck Environmental Field Laboratory near Lake Matoaka. This two panel system serves as a demonstration opportunity and pilot project.

As part of the Housing and Dining Comprehensive Facilities Plan the first building-scale solar array will be installed. A total of 786 solar panels will be installed as part of the West Woods development; of those, 647 will be placed on the rooftop of the new dining hall. This array is projected to have a total yearly production of 455,919 kWh.

Off-Site Solar

William & Mary sources nearly 50% of the university’s electrical draw from a 20 megawatt facility in James City County. This represents a greater percentage than any other public university in the state. With electricity being the largest part of W&M’s carbon footprint, the production at this facility is critical to the university's climate action plan.
