Digital Learning Environment

Digital Learning Environment

The digital learning environment (DLE) is the ecosystem of digital tools, resources, materials, and related technologies that support the many pathways of teaching and learning at the University. Questions we are addressing in our project include

  • What does the current DLE look like at William & Mary?
  • How can we redesign the DLE to better align resources and strengthen the William & Mary experience?
Project Summary

As the University considers next steps in redesigning the DLE, important decisions must be made regarding our learning management system (LMS), supporting tools and resources, and pathways toward curriculum-based technology integration. These decisions must be rooted in the learning needs and educational expectations of our community. In collaboration with campus co-educators, APeL began the conversation about how to address the complexity of DLEs with a focus on teaching and learning. In Spring 2017, APeL facilitated focus group sessions with faculty members to identify hallmark characteristics of teaching and learning at William & Mary. Additionally, the groups explored specific needs that should shape the architecture of the DLE. This project will continue through academic year 2017-2018 with the following milestones:

Milestones
  • May-August (2017): Faculty and staff focus groups to explore how we teach and learn
  • July-August (2017): Explore prototypes for a flexible DLE; identify technical and budget constraints
  • August-December (2017): Create and share prototypes
  • January-May (2018): Evaluate products; issue RFPs if needed
  • June 2018 and beyond: Ongoing adjustment of DLE to align with W&M teaching and learning
