Message regarding Bill Bullock

William & Mary Provost Michael Halleran sent the following message to the campus community on Aug. 2 - Ed.

Dear Colleagues,

With deep sadness, I write to inform you that Emeritus Professor G. William (Bill) Bullock, Jr. died Thursday, July 29, 2010, at home with family members by his side.  Prior to his retirement in 1992, Professor Bullock had completed forty years of service to education in America, thirty-three years in Virginia, and twenty-five years to the College's School of Education. Throughout his long career, he distinguished himself as a vigorous thinker, a demanding teacher, a formidable colleague, an uncompromising scholar, and a continuing student in his field of educational administration.

When he joined the faculty of the College in 1967, Professor Bullock brought a rich combination of academic preparation and diverse experiences in public school administration. Having completed his B.A. in Political Science at Lynchburg College in 1950, Professor Bullock taught English for two years at Phillips College in Lynchburg and then embarked upon a fifteen-year career in public education that included service as a building principal and school superintendent in six different systems in Virginia, Illinois, and Michigan.  During those years, he also completed both master's and doctoral degrees in educational administration at the University of Virginia and served in the United States Marine Corps.

For twenty-five years, Professor Bullock was a central force in the College's graduate degree programs in Educational Administration. He taught several core courses in supervision, administrative theory, educational law, and organizational behavior.

Dr. Bullock was preceded in death by his youngest son, David Brian Bullock.  He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Jenny) Qualls Bullock; a son, Stephen Bullock of Chicago, IL.; two daughters, Elizabeth Bullock Diakun (Alan) of Charlotte, NC, and Margaret Ann Bullock Walker (Jim) of Richmond, VA; five grand-sons, Stephen Adam Bullock, Nicholas Charles Diakun, Christopher Willard Walker, James Cameron Marshall Walker, Avery Matthew Walker, and one grand-daughter, Anna Elizabeth Diakun.

A celebration of Professor Bullock's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 3, in the Wren Chapel.  A reception will follow in the Great Hall.  Parking is available in the lot on Prince George St., behind the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.

The family requests that contributions be made to the David Brian Bullock Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Honorable James E. Bradberry, 979 Willbrook Rd., Newport News, VA 23602, in memory of the 34 years of dedication to the fund by Professor Bullock.  Online condolences may be offered at www.nelsoncares.com.
