University Communications accepting entries for 2017 student journalism awards

Each spring the university honors William & Mary students with the Rex Smith and the W. Wilford Kale, Jr. Journalism Awards. The awards are centered on excellence in student journalism and participation in publication activities at W&M. A description of each award is below. A monetary prize is associated with each award.

University Communications is now accepting submissions for both awards, which will be announced during the student awards reception in April. Deadline for entries is 6:00 p.m. on March 17, 2017. Send submissions to awhitehead@wm.edu. Entries will be reviewed by a panel comprised of at least three members of the University Communications staff.

You may submit entries via email or to The College of William & Mary, University Communications, Discovery 2, Suite 101, P.O. Box 8795, Williamsburg, VA 23187-8795. Please include three examples of your work and a brief summary of your media involvement while at the College and what you have gained from the experience.

Please also share this information with members of your staff. All entries welcome.

The Rex Smith Award

This award was established in 1960 by friends of Rex Smith, an alumnus of the College and longtime writer and editor for the Associated Press. The earnings from the endowment are presented annually to a student who participates in publication activities at the College.

This award was established to honor a student who has shown excellence in journalistic writing at the College. The College has given this award since 1979 following its endowment by W.
