Important action by the U.S. Supreme Court and Fourth Circuit
William & Mary President Taylor Reveley sent the following message to the W&M community on Oct. 6, 2014 - Ed.
Dear William & Mary Community,
The United States Supreme Court today declined to review the decision last spring of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit (our circuit) striking the provision in the Virginia Constitution banning same-sex marriages. This afternoon the Fourth Circuit issued its mandate precluding any further enforcement by the Commonwealth of this provision. The Fourth Circuit decision did not deal with civil unions or domestic partnerships. We expect the Governor will work with state colleges and universities, as well as other state entities, to engage the various aspects of the new situation, including offering employee benefits to the same-sex spouses of state employees. William & Mary will move promptly to put these benefits into effect for our people as soon as feasible. We believe this long-overdue moment will come shortly.
