Dominion Hackathon 2018
A team from William & Mary placed second in Dominion Enterprise's annual university hackathon. It is the third year in a row that a William & Mary team has placed in the top three.
Erik Stevenson ’18, Hayden Le ’19, Rozda Askari ’19, and Ivan Echevarria ’18 of team “Turtles” won $5000 in scholarship money and wireless headphones for building Tribal Knowledge, a tool for annotating complex code. Two other teams from William & Mary also participated.
On February 22 and 23, students from colleges and universities in Virginia competed in the HackU 6 at Dominion Enterprise’s Norfolk headquarters.
This year, Dominion Enterprises issued specific challenges related to their business needs and gave the teams two days to devise and present a solution.
Team “Turtles” chose to tackle the problem of communicating institutional knowledge. When new developers join a team, they often lack an intuitive understanding of the team’s code, and the time investment to teach them is significant. To help solve this problem, the “Turtles” made Tribal Knowledge, an extension for Google’s Chrome browser that allows users to annotate their code with easily-readable formatted text.
