Research Abroad

Expanding horizons through global scholarship

In Summer 2026, WMSURE students will travel to Bridgetown, Barbados, to participate in a groundbreaking research project creating a Linguistic Atlas of the Caribbean. Students will collaborate with peers from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, engaging in hands-on fieldwork and transcribing recordings from local research participants.

Last year, 15 WMSURE students took part in this program, gaining invaluable experience in research methodology, cultural exchange, and collaborative scholarship. Through WMSURE Research Abroad, students expand their horizons, deepen their academic growth, and prepare for graduate study and professional careers with a global perspective.

Eligibility

Participation in this research abroad experience requires enrollment in AFST 251 - Soon Come: Caribbean Languages & Identity taught by WMSURE co-director Dr. Iyabo Osiapem, which provides the academic foundation for this global research initiative.

An application will be released to these classes in the spring semester. More details are forthcoming.
