Internship Funding for Monroe Scholars

Sophomore or junior Monroe Scholars may apply for a one-time $3,000 grant to apply towards cost of living while completing a summer internship.

Funding Information

Sophomore or junior Monroe Scholars may apply for a one-time $3,000 grant to apply towards cost of living while completing a summer internship. Funding is not guaranteed. If the number of applications exceeds funding available, the following criteria will be used to select who is funded:

  1. Students whose internships are unpaid or underfunded (meaning less than hourly minimum wage) will be prioritized.
  2. Juniors who have not already received a Monroe Scholar Research Grant will be prioritized.
  3. Students whose essay responses make the strongest case for the benefit of the internship to their career aspirations will be prioritized. 
Eligibility
  • Applicant must complete an internship that is a minimum of 280 hours worked at one organization over at least 7 weeks during the summer.
  • Applicant must be a sophomore or junior Monroe Scholar in good academic standing.
  • Applicant must return to William & Mary as an undergraduate student in the fall semester following their summer internship.
  • Applicant must be or become eligible to work in the United States by May 1, 2024 (if completing an internship in the U.S.).
  • Applicants completing internships abroad must comply with the International Travel requirements listed below.
Ineligible Internships
  • Unsupervised internships that are not affiliated with an organization.
  • Internship site is owned or managed by a member of the intern’s family.

Required Documents
  • Essay Response: In 300-500 words, please explain how completing this internship will benefit you and assist you in reaching your career goals.
  • Internship posting, job description, or other document that describes the internship position's job duties in detail.
  • An official document that confirms your internship offer (this can be an offer letter or email from your employer). This letter should include the employer's contact information, confirm the internship has been offered, list the start and end dates for the internship, the total number of hours to be worked, and the rate of pay (if applicable).
  • If you are completing an unpaid internship, you must have your internship supervisor complete the online verification form which certifies that they have reviewed and will comply with the Department of Labor criteria established in the FLSA.
International Travel

Please review the following information if you plan to travel internationally for your internship.

 Review the W&M Travel Alerts website to check the status of your intended destination.

  • If the country is listed as a Restricted Destination, travel is prohibited, and you must adjust your plans.
  • If there is a W&M Travel Risk Warning, you must submit an application for approval to the Travel Warning Review Committee through the Reves Center in order for your proposal to be considered for funding.
  1. Once you are notified whether your grant is awarded, you will receive instructions about receiving CISI Comprehensive Medical and Evacuation insurance (purchases by the Charles Center on your behalf).
  2. You will be required to attend a predeparture safety orientation arranged by the Reves Center.
Next Steps
Requirements for Funded Students
  • Complete 3 online career-readiness modules (instructions and access will be provided).
  • Register for a 0-credit summer internship course.
  • Complete an evaluation at the end of the summer.
  • Participate in the Fall 2024 Undergraduate Internship Showcase.
Timeline

Applications will be reviewed after the March 18th deadline. Students will be notified by mid-April and must sign and return their award letter to accept funding. Students applying after March 18th by the April 15th deadline will be notified by the end of April. Before funding is disbursed, students must complete 3 online career readiness modules (more information to come). They will then receive information about registering for the 0-credit summer internship course and attending an orientation. Payments to students will be processed starting in mid-May.

Additional Funding

Students whose internships are underfunded or unpaid may apply for additional internship funding through the F.U.S.E. process hosted by the Office of Career Development and Professional Engagement. The application will open around mid-February. F.U.S.E. funding is not guaranteed. Students should review the F.U.S.E. funding criteria and apply on or before the deadline for full consideration.
