2011 Fall Newsletter

Letter from the Chair

Dear Alumni and Friends:

This is to introduce myself as the Art and Art History Department’s new Chair, and to extend a warm welcome from the department.  Since 1995 I have been teaching Renaissance and Baroque Art at the College; my own research area within this period is Dutch and Flemish art, especially landscape.   I have taken over as Chair from Brian Kreydatus who is currently in Paris on a well-deserved stint at the "La Cité Internationale des Arts". Brian has my heartfelt thanks for being so  generous with his time and advice during these months of transition.

Much has happened this past year.  A few highlights include our initiation of  a new distinguished lecturer series, made possible by the generous gift of a donor who has chosen to remain anonymous.  Our first speaker, was Charles W. Haxthausen of Williams College.  Two valued members of our department retired this year;  Professor Alan Wallach, Ralph H. Wark Professor of Art and Art History an Professor of American Studies, and  Professor Marlene Jack, our ceramicist.  We are also very pleased to introduce two new faculty members:  Xin Wu, who will be teaching East Asian Art and Michael Jabbur, who will teach ceramics.  Finally, the two-summer renovation of Andrews is just about complete.

Please read about these stories (and more) in our newsletter.  Though you are always welcome  to visit, we particularly hope you can come help us celebrate homecoming this fall (the weekend of October 21st).  Keep in touch.

With all Best Wishes,

Catherine Levesque
