8 Dimensions of Wellness

Kickstart your W&M journey by creating a wellness goal.

Wellness is such a broad term, and how we think about it is affected by our culture and our life experiences. We believe wellness is conscious, self-directed, evolving, holistic, multidimensional, positive, affirming and inclusive.

All dimensions of wellness need our attention for us to truly flourish. There doesn't have to be a balance among all dimensions. Instead, the goal is to find personal consistency with dimensions that are most authentic for you.

You can't get there passively; it requires active awareness, acceptance, and commitment. It requires attention and intention. We hope the following information about the eight dimensions of wellness will help you get started. After discussing the dimensions, we will give you time to make a wellness goal.

Please take a moment to discuss the eight dimensions of wellness with the group. (Ask a couple of participants how they define, then explain how Health & Wellness defines it (read definition). Ask for example of a goal that one might set for each.)

There are infinite paths on the journey toward wellness; we call this doing "Wellness Your Way." W&M respects students' personal and cultural lenses of how they view wellness and seeks to provide programs that address their areas of interest. W&M Health & Wellness department provides introductory workshops to inform the community of all wellness services available to them.

Often, programs are offered based on students' requests; it is one way to honor students' curiosity and meet the goal of integrating diverse approaches into their wellness routines. Services and programs are evidence-informed and strive to include the diverse perspectives of our community. Please take the next three minutes to think about an individual wellness goal. Considering the eight dimensions we just discussed, take out your device and schedule a one-hour block in your calendar for the next two weeks, to practice self-care, this should be something you enjoy not related to classes.

Thank you for taking some time to think about how you might start your wellness journey as a part of the William & Mary community. While you explore your own journey with wellness you will also be supporting the wellness of your peers and other members of this community.
