What to Expect


What type of readings are involved in first-and-second-year courses? (e.g. articles, textbook) How much reading should a student expect to do per week? 
 

For MUSC 201, there are one to two 5-10 page reading assignments each week. The readings provide succinct and clear explanations of the relevant materials, along with examples of both sophisticated and problematic part-writing. 

What sorts of assignments should a student expect in first-and-second-year courses? (e.g. quizzes, group projects, presentations) 

There are 1-2 assignments per week. There are five quizzes and two exams throughout the semester. A composition project is due at the end of the semester. 

Beyond the required course texts, are there other course materials a student should be prepared to purchase for first-and-second-year courses? 

Besides the textbook, the only other required materials are staff paper and a pencil. 

Is there anything else that is important for first-and-second-year students to know and/or expect from their courses? 

Before enrolling in MUSC 201, students should be familiar with basic elements and concepts relating to Western Common Practice tonal harmony, including standard notational practice, scales, triads, seventh chords, and Roman numeral analysis.  Students who are unfamiliar with these concepts are advised to take MUSC 101.
