Freeman Intern Fellowships in Asia
Since 2002, the generosity of the Freeman Foundation has been instrumental in the development of the study of Asia and its diaspora at William & Mary. In 2017, APIA program director Francis Tanglao Aguas continued this long and deep collaboration with the support and hard work of former Dean Joel Schwartz and AMES/APIA faculty member Professor Stephen Sheehi in order for William & Mary to be a part of the Freeman Foundation's initiative to expand people to people exchange between the United States and Asia through internships.
The Freeman Intern Fellowship program awards 20 scholarships to students seeking to intern in Asian countries such as China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. The program supports undergraduates from all majors to pursue an 8-week summer internship in East Asia, with each fellow receiving a minimum award of $5,000.
The application deadline for the 2026 Freeman Intern Fellowship Program is November 20, 2025.
