West 1 Housing & Dining Development

Project Update

West Woods Dining Hall will delay opening while work is completed to ensure the facility is fully functional. Commons Dining Hall and other campus dining locations will continue to serve you throughout the spring 2026 semester while West Woods Dining Hall is completed and to provide teams an opportunity to complete training and transition dining operations to the new hall.

The West Woods design shapes a welcoming, residential-scaled village within a highly dense neighborhood in a five-building complex. The plan includes four residential buildings (Poplar Hall, Maple Hall, Oak Hall and Pine Hall) and a dining pavilion (West Woods Commons).

The scale of the development is shaped to maintain a welcoming residential campus experience. Limiting the scale of development to three stories plus a fully occupied attic maintains a comfortable residential feel. A new campus quad becomes the unifying landscape space, similar in proportion to the Sunken Garden of the historic campus. Smaller courtyard spaces and pedestrian pathways develop more intimate landscape spaces within the village. Common space distributed throughout distributes opportunity for connection while creating vibrant beacons of activity.

Housing & Dining Comprehensive Facilities Plan

This project is a part of a long-term, comprehensive plan to modernize and revitalize William & Mary's residential and dining facilities. The project spans 10 years over three phases to address aging residence and dining halls and ensure they advance the integration of living and learning on campus. Learn more...

The architectural expression of West 1 is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Georgian architecture of William & Mary. Proportions and rhythms echo historic residence halls like Barrett and Jefferson, while detailing reflects the transitional architectural zone of campus.
