Highland Centennial Legacy Project

James Monroe’s Highland, the home for 27 years of the Revolutionary War hero who became our nation’s fifth president, presents a unique opportunity for the Commonwealth of Virginia to advance longstanding priorities, including tourism, education, and historic preservation and interpretation,  based on the recent archaeological discovery of Monroe’s house, long lost and forgotten. Already a significant attraction, Highland now has the potential – if properly developed, enhanced, and sustained – to assume its appropriate place in the compelling narrative that is Virginia’s distinctive role in the winning of American independence and securing peace and ordered liberty in its aftermath.
