Sophia Haile, ’23 received the James Monroe Prize in Civic Leadership last February 2023 during the William & Mary’s annual Charter Day commemoration. The award is given annually to a student “who has shown sustained leadership of an unusual quality, leadership combined with initiative, character and an unfailing commitment to leveraging the assets of the William & Mary community to address the needs of our society.” Sophia is the president of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), a club on campus that seeks to ensure that people of all backgrounds have the opportunities to pursue a major and career in chemistry.
