Francie Cate (PhD, University of Wisconsin-Madison), the Kenan Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures, joined W&M in 1986. She has served as MLL Chair since January 2022 (Emily Wilcox is Interim Chair Fall 2025), is the founding Program Director for W&M's summer program established in Cádiz in 2003; and the faculty advisor for W&M’s Semester in Sevilla program. Her courses include Spanish-English Translation; the Spanish Civil War; the Franco dictatorship; and the cultural history of Spain. In Dec. 2024 she published Popular Memory and Franco's 'Disappeared`; Telling Stories of Mourning, Resistance, and Activism https://link.springer.com/book/9783031727276 . She is author of the award-winning Spanish Culture behind Barbed-Wire: Memory and Representation of the French Concentration Camps (1939-1945). She serves as the book series editor for Faro de la Memoria, published by the University of Cádiz. She will serve as a W&M Faculty Trip Host for the upcoming Spain ~ Andalucia in a Parador, from November 5 - 13, 2026.
