Visions and Goals
Our Department ensures that students develop the cultural and linguistic proficiencies required for global citizenship. Our alums graduate with strong communication, research, and analytical skills. They also have the global/intercultural fluency competencies eagerly sought by employers (as reported by the National Association of Colleges & Employers). This preparation allows our alums to forge unique professional paths and to distinguish themselves among their peers. Our graduates are ready to engage, serve, and collaborate in the US and with international communities at large.
The language and cultural programs in Modern Languages & Literatures represent linguistic and cultural diversity not only around the world but also within the United States. Myriad languages were spoken in these lands well before the arrival of English speakers; after that, many more have been spoken and continue to be spoken in the present-day United States. Our Department reflects the rich multicultural and multilingual status of the US at large; we acknowledge the rights of individuals to receive instruction in languages other than English; we highlight issues of social inequality toward marginalized people; and prepare students to engage with diverse communities both nationally and internationally.
