Classical Studies Honors Graduating Seniors with Excellence Awards
The Classical Studies Department recognizes several graduating seniors for their achievements – in Greek, Latin Ancient Mediterranean Archaeology, and Ancient History. Read on for a few words from each about what they have taken away from their time here with us and about their future plans:
Hannah Ryan, Archaeology, Phi Bta Kappa Award in Classical Studies

“While in the Classical Studies Department, I have participated in research through the Liber Memorialis Project, organized departmental social events as the President of Eta Sigma Phi, travelled across the world for the first time through the Rome/Pompeii study abroad trip, and generally expanded my knowledge of the ancient Mediterranean world. I've studied both Ancient Greek and Latin, and I primarily focus on archaeology in the Roman world. My academic interests mainly lie in Roman architecture and the roles of women in society, especially through social display. I also have interests in both water systems and textiles. Next year I plan to take a gap year where I will be working as a gardener on campus and assisting with further research for the Liber Memorialis Project with Professor S-B. In the future, I plan to attend graduate school to further my studies in Classical Archaeology.”
Sarah Long, Latin, Hogan Award for Excellence in Classical Studies

“I am a Latin major whose research focuses on the lived experiences of women in antiquity. Under the guidance of Professor Donahue, I completed
an Honors Thesis exploring the intersections between Roman law and gender. My memorable experience was studying abroad in Rome and Pompeii, where I deepened my love for the ancient world and formed lasting friendships! Next year, I am going to pursue a master’s degree in Greek and Latin Languages and Literatures at the University of Oxford.”
Julia Dunn, Ancient History and Archaeology Joint Degree Programme, The Archaeological Institute of America Award for Excellence in Material Culture

"In the Joint Degree Programme, I studied Classics with a concentration in Ancient History and Archaeology, focusing especially on the material culture of the ancient Mediterranean. Over the past four years, I have greatly enjoyed my time at both William & Mary and St. Andrews, and I will miss the communities that made these universities such incredible places to learn and grow. After graduation, I plan to spend the summer working and traveling. "

Grant Cvik, Classical Civilization, the Eta Sigma Phi Award for
Excellence in the Study of Ancient Cultures
“Classical Studies will forever be one of my favorite memories of William & Mary. From Greece to Rome, Comedy, Epic, Tragedy, and whether Lesbia’s sparrow was
a childhood pet, my studies here will always be a part of who I am. Much like Catullus writing to his dearly departed brother, with many tears, “and forever, [Classical Studies], hail and farewell”.
Maia Tindall, Archaeology, John Oakley Award for Greek Archaeology
“I am interested in Greek art, archaeology, and geo-spatial technologies. I excavated at Morgantina. I’ve just completed my honors thesis, titled Sacred Struggles: Hero Cults and the Shaping of Pan-Hellenic Space.”
