Congratulations Prof Schueller

For the last several years, Professor Matthew Schueller has been a fixture on the third floor of Boswell. He has offered immensely popular freshmen seminars (in which competition for the honors he bestowed in class contests was fierce!) and at all levels of our curriculum, in Latin, ancient history, and archaeology classes.  We now congratulate him on his new position at Hampden-Sydney College - where he will serve for the next three years as Visiting Assistant Professor, helping them build a rich curriculum in ancient studies that incorporates material culture. He will be greatly missed, but we take comfort in the fact that he won't be far away, either. Macte Virtute, Matt!

He will also continue his research program, treating the archaeology and architecture of urban landscapes in the Roman Empire’s Balkan provinces between the 2nd century BCE and 4th century CE. His work investigates how Roman public entertainment venues helped to shape the ideas, spaces, and artifacts of urban life in these regions by promoting multivalent interactions among spectators and performers. He currently digs in partnership with Balkan Heritage and the National Institute Stobi at the Roman city of Stobi in North Macedonia.
