Not a Chem Major?

Chemistry is a discipline that affects every aspect of our lives. Cars, smartphones, drugs, and art are only possible because their developers understand chemistry. Biology, metabolism, and evolution function because of chemistry. Renewable energy relies on sound chemistry. Laws and policies affect our exposure to and dependence on chemistry. Really, we can't afford not to know chemistry.

So - you're convinced that learning some chemistry is a good thing, but don't want to commit to a degree. Here are some options:

Chemistry Courses for Non-Science Majors

These chemistry courses are open to all freshmen. If you want to broaden your general knowledge of science, but don't plan to major in a natural science, one of these courses may be for you:

  • CHEM 100 fulfills the COLL 100 requirement.
  • CHEM 150 fulfills the COLL 150 requirement.
  • CHEM 101 (Chemistry, Energy, and Environment) fulfills a COLL 200 requirement.
  • CHEM 201 (Color, Light & Chemistry) fulfills a COLL 200 requirement.
Chemistry Courses for Other Science Majors

Several majors have a chemistry requirement. Double-check the Undergraduate Catalog to make sure you fulfill all requirements of your major. Some students may take the lecture courses without enrolling in the associated laboratory; but the labs are required for biology, neuroscience and pre-medical tracks. If you have AP or IB test credit in chemistry, you may have credit for some of these courses.
