The Medical Mindset
This weekly virtual class is led by a practicing emergency room physician. Students will engage with questions of practice, critical thinking, and learning as they relate to medicine. The course explores topics such as adult learning theory, the science of asking questions, burnout prevention, and performing under pressure—skills that are essential during the brief encounters between providers and patients in the Emergency Department.
Throughout the semester, students will have the opportunity to participate in optional experiences outside of regular class hours. Each session requires pre-reading, drawn from the cornerstone text, The Emergency Mind, or from supplemental articles. Class meetings alternate between discussion-heavy, interactive lectures and experiential application of skills introduced in prior sessions. Application sessions may feature simulated clinical scenarios, guest lecturers, and skills-building workshops.
